What is Spiritual Direction?
In its most basic form, spiritual direction is the opportunity to companion someone through their own spiritual journey, guide them into deeper spiritual practice and reflection, and bear witness to their own truth more fully emerging.
It is an ancient spiritual practice that calls us into intentional transformation.
I, the spiritual director, am not here to teach or counsel. I am here to listen to you with respect, holding your struggles and revelations alike in confidence. I am here to listen to God in you, whose voice we may honor together through guided meditation and prayer, intentional conversation, or a silent cup of coffee.
My job is to see you, and more importantly, to see God in you. You have the wisdom and the ability within you already, but it is my privilege through spiritual direction to bear witness to your power, as we journey together toward the fullness of who God made you to be.

What does a spiritual direction 'session' look like?
The vague answer is that it can look like a lot of different things, and whatever you most connect with is what we'll do. Since this is entirely about you and your own journey, after all.
The more specific answer is that it often starts with a spiritual practice such as a guided prayer or meditation. This not only gives you additional tools to implement on your own; it grounds the time we spend together. The remainder of our time together is guided by you. Often, people already know what they'd like to discuss; other times, something arises for them during the spiritual practice at the beginning. Either way, my goal is to listen well. You'll do most of the talking. I'll ask questions, reflect upon what you've said, and engage with you around particular questions that you bring to the table, searching with you for the ways that you can discover the truth that is already within. In between sessions, some people enjoy 'homework,' which really just means ideas of ways to connect more regularly or more fully with the divine in between us seeing each other that they can give a try. This is solely at your discretion, however, as is the whole experience.

Who ought to participate in spiritual direction?
This is the part where I predictably say "everyone!"
But honestly, it's true. In the same way that I believe everyone would benefit from therapy, I truly think that everyone would benefit in some way from participating in spiritual direction. Someone is dedicatedly walking alongside you as you pursue the divine's presence in your life. It's an experience that can only be fruitful.
In my own experience, I primarily work with LGBTQIA+ persons, those who have been harmed by the church, and others who are unpacking various forms of spiritual trauma or theological baggage. This is likely because those are the identifiers of my own story. There are also those I work with, however, who are simply looking for a more creative spiritual practice, who are trying to discern life changes and important decisions, who want to see God more clearly in the day-to-day, and the list goes on. Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, we will tailor the experience of spiritual direction to suit you.
